Our story

The Cognitron story

Cognitron began with Professor Adam Hampshire's frustration with traditional lab methods: expensive set-ups, small samples, and results that were difficult to replicate at scale. With Dr Peter Hellyer, he built a platform that could take precise cognitive testing out of the lab and onto the devices people already own.

What started as a research tool quickly proved its value beyond the lab, powering the BBC Great British Intelligence Test, one of the largest online cognitive studies ever conducted, with more than 300,000 participants.

Continually developed and validated since 2007, Cognitron is trusted by clinical, research, healthcare, pharmaceutical, and military organisations internationally, bridging neuroscience research and real-world impact.

The Cognitron difference

Accuracy

IDoCT scoring separates thinking from reaction speed and device lag, and compares each person with a large normative dataset.

Any device

Runs on standard smartphones, tablets, and computers, supervised or at home, with results comparable to clinic testing.

Scale

Used in population studies, including remote testing of 112,964 adults after COVID-19.

Biological and transdiagnostic

Scores track brain structure on MRI and early disease markers, across more than ten neurological conditions.

Built for defence

Brought into military medicine by Professor James Mitchell, who leads the UK Military Traumatic Brain Injury Service.

Cognitron Defence

Always evolving

Each new study feeds back into the platform through larger normative data, refined tasks, and adaptability to new populations and conditions.

The people behind Cognitron

Dr Peter Hellyer

Dr Peter Hellyer

Co-founder

Dr Hellyer co-founded H2 Cognitive Designs Ltd with Professor Hampshire in January 2018. A computational neuroscientist and Wellcome Trust fellow, he led Cognitron's deployment for the BBC Great British Intelligence Test.

Professor Adam Hampshire

Professor Adam Hampshire

Co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer

Originator and co-developer of the Cognitron platform. Led the BBC Great British Intelligence Test, one of the largest online cognitive studies ever conducted, with over 300,000 participants. His research combines large-scale cognitive testing, brain imaging, psychometrics, and machine learning.
